Estimated Reading Time | 4 Minutes
Think about a Pharmacy Masters (Industrial Pharmacy & Medicine Manufacturing) holder, who never worked as a Pharmacist, started as a call center assistant, and charcoal businessman to a full-time musician. That’s whom we’re discussing today.
Who’s he as a person?
Hyder Ali, known as “Hydyy Brown” which is his stage name, is a Saudi-born Indian artist based in Dubai, working full-time as a professional performing artist since 2018. But how did a Pharmacy Master’s holder end up being a full-time musician?
Hydyy was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the family moved back to their home country soon after his birth. His parents brought him up entirely in Kerala, India, where he did his studies till Bachelor’s in Pharmacy. After graduation, he pursued onto Master’s in Industrial Pharmacy & Medicine Manufacturing in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
He worked as a Telecom call center assistant to earn some extra bucks during his studies. After finishing his studies, he moved back to Saudi Arabia to help his father with their family healthcare business in Jeddah. In his own words, he was living the life of a “spoiled kid” who had nothing to worry about and had a business to jump into soon after his studies.
After more than a year in Saudi Arabia, he moved to Indonesia with a completely different project – charcoal export. And finally, he moved to Dubai as an expansion of the business in Indonesia.
By 2018, he found himself not enjoying what he was doing with his life and also financially struggling; he decided to take a leap of faith – jump into being a full-time working musician!
Hydyy & Music:
The music life of Aidoruus started while in school when his Art teacher pushed him onto the stage to sing Karaoke, and he was eight! As per Aidoruus, he was shivering on the stage, which in fact lasted till he was around the age of 18, even though he was performing for ten years on small stages. He was into Bollywood music until he was in University. During his first year doing his Graduation course in Pharmacy, he decided to pick up a guitar, primarily to impress girls, he admits. As days went, he realized the need to learn to play guitar, or he won’t be able to keep up with the hype of “singer who also plays guitar” for long. After finding an institute that coaches guitar, he dropped out after the first day of the class as he was too impatient to spend months learning the boring music theories. The urge to start playing songs brought him to YouTube and finding an instructor who does his purpose. His journey of playing guitar started there.
After arriving in Dubai, he bought a cheap guitar, which cost him a tiny $30, to keep in touch with playing guitar. During the time he was struggling financially in 2018, he bought another guitar as he realized the need for at least an average quality guitar if he’s getting on stage to perform. After almost a year of performing for free around the city, he signed his first residency contract in December 2018, and his life as a full-time performing artist started there.
Since then, he has performed 500+ gigs, all over United Arab Emirates, some of which were Dubai Shopping Festival, Dubai Expo 2020 Premier, World Music Day (Abu Dhabi), and residencies in many of the top venues in the country.
His music tastes moved from Bollywood to western pop and classic rock. Starting his performing career with just an acoustic guitar and his voice, he upgraded his rig and performing setup as time moved. Currently, he performs as a one-person band, with a sophisticated rig including a full-size loop station in his large pedalboard, drum pad, and his custom telecaster, which he calls “Irene.” Aidoruus blew up his setlist from 34 songs to 300+ songs till the present and continues to add up songs. He plays modern pop, classic rock, and enjoys performing old-school rock all the way from the 70s with his twists to the tunes.
Hydyy, living his life doing what he loves, says moving from business to being a full-time performing artist was not easy but well worth it. The covid situation has affected the entertainment industry in Dubai, but he is optimistic about the coming season as the news about events is being talked about, and he’s already performing for different venues and events across the country.
