Self-care can look different for everyone.

With overbooked schedules, unanswered emails, the article that won’t write itself, and the social expectation to keep up with the newest meme, it can be challenging to make time for our mental health. My favorite and some of the most simple forms of self-care are: exercising, indulging in delicious food, taking a relaxing bubble bath, reading a good book, or meditating. We all know that it’s extremely important to prioritize self-care, so that we can continue growing to become the best version of ourselves. Often, we may feel that there are not enough hours in the day to get a workout in, make a home-cooked meal or spend an hour soaking til’ pruny. So here are a few tips and tricks that I utilize to squeeze everything in!

Download a fitness app! My personal favorite is 6 Pack Promise. The app offers quick 5-10 minute workout routines & sends daily reminders that are a great motivator for those days when you’d rather stay in bed. There are plenty of other apps that are similar, so choose your favorite! It doesn’t matter how you do it – just get that temple you were gifted movin’ & groovin’! You will feel more energized, get better rest and be happier. Another game-changer to working out in your own space can be the utilization of weights, resistance bands, pull-up bars, and other inexpensive equipment, rather than paying for a costly gym membership.  For many people, it can be much easier to stay consistent and get it done when it’s all readily available to you in the comfort of your own home.  Most importantly, taking care of your physical health will positively impact all aspects of your life.

When pressed for time, meal prepping and snack packing can be lifesavers. It can be boring to prepare the exact same meal for the entire week. I like to prepare large side dishes like quinoa salad, grilled veggies, fruit salad, etc., for the weekdays. Then, switch up my main course each day. This saves time, gives me variety, and adds a little direction to my cooking. For example, if I have already prepared sautéed bell peppers and onions, I can quickly whip up a breakfast burrito in the morning or a taco for lunch. My go-to snacks are nuts, hard-boiled eggs, dried fruits & fruits with rinds (i.e., oranges, bananas, avocados, etc.). Not only are they healthy, but they are also easy to pack and delicious too!

Pampering can be one of the best ways to show ourselves love. There is nothing more soothing than washing away a long hard day. I get the most out of my experience by adding invigorating essential oils & Epsom salts to my bubble bath or incorporating shower steamers when the hustle and bustle calls! If you feel inclined to get outside, taking a trip to your nearest natural hot spring is always a delight! Hot springs have especially high mineral content, helping to absorb essential trace minerals, heal skin problems, boost blood circulation, reduce pain, relieve stress and promote restful sleep.

Reading can be profoundly beneficial for keeping that brain of yours firing on all cylinders. You do not have to read a college textbook to stay sharp. Check out your local library or download audiobooks to expand your knowledge, dive into an adventure or just take a little time to relax. Reading can be a great way to get your mind off of things that may be bogging you down and can allow you to reset so that you can face your daily challenges head-on with a better and more evolved mindset.  Knowledge applied is power; use that to your advantage.

Releasing stress via meditation methods can be extremely fruitful for your mental wellbeing.  There are various ways to achieve a state of meditation. Most people think of deep breathing in a crossed leg position when that word is mentioned; however, many meditate by doing yoga, going for a drive, journaling, cooking, or simply taking a walk. Fresh air and a clear mind can do wonders for the soul. Meditating can decrease blood pressure, reduce stress, improve sleep, help with controlling anxiety and enhance self-awareness. The more self-aware you are the easier it can be for you to apply healthy habits and self-care routines into your life. Don’t limit yourself to just one method of meditation; find what works for you and incorporate it into your agenda.

It’s important to check-in with ourselves emotionally and physically every day. Remembering to take a moment to breathe, meditate & let go of stressors can be all the difference between a good and a bad day. We are not machines. With that being said, even our cars and electronics break if they are not properly serviced & maintained. When we forget to make time for self-care, we run the risk of impairing our health.

Adding a few healthy habits to your routine will allow you to reap the reward of feeling refreshed & rejuvenated!
